Rows of Countries that Return Lockdown due to Corona Surges

The corona virus pandemic is still a world threat although the trend of transmission of the SARS-like virus has declined in several countries and regions. Many countries have begun to relax the restrictive movement policy and gradually re-open economic and business activities after the downward trend in Covid-19 transmission. However, some countries have to re-“shut down” and implement a regional lockdown after finding a new surge of corona transmission again.

The following is a list of countries that have re-implemented a lockdown and a series of policies to limit movement due to the threat of the second wave of corona.

 China

 After implementing a national lockdown for three months due to Covid-19, the Chinese government reopened economic and business activities, such as a number of iconic tourist attractions, to schools gradually in May.

 Shortly, Chinese health officials detected a spike in new corona cases that were discovered in the Capital City of Beijing in early June.

 China then decided to implement a lockdown in parts of Beijing after hundreds of new corona viruses were detected again in the traditional market area of ​​the capital.

 Earlier this week, Chinese authorities also reported a surge in new cases of the corona virus, 61 infections.  The National Health Commission recorded 57 cases of local transmission and 4 imported cases. The surge in new cases came from the Xinfadi wholesale market.  The cluster in the market occurred after three traders and two market visitors tested positive for the corona.

 This is the highest daily count of new cases since April 14, when the country recorded 89 infections a day.

 most cases of local transmission were found in Xinjiang which is home to the ethnic minority Muslim Uighurs.  The spread occurred in the capital city of Xianjiang, Urumqi and has expanded to neighboring cities.

 Aside from that area, 14 cases were also recorded in Dalian City, Liaoning Province.  Then two local cases were found in Jilin Province near the North Korean border.

 Based on Worldometer statistics as of Wednesday (29/7), China has 84,060 cases of Covid-19 recorded with 4,634 deaths.

 Australia

 Similar to China, Australia decided to isolate the state of Victoria after finding a surge of new corona cases to reach three digits of infection per day in early July.

 In the two weeks since the lockdown took place, Victoria also recorded a record number of daily cases of 217, 363, and 275.

 Australia also implemented a lockdown on Victoria's capital, Melbourne, for six weeks in order to control the soaring corona virus in the region.

 Prime Minister Scott Morisson's government even deployed military and police personnel to guard the Victoria state border and ensure residents remained at home during the isolation period.

 Australia even reported a new corona infection record of 502 cases a day on Wednesday (7/22).  A total of 484 cases of a total of 502 new corona infections were found in Victoria.

 That way there are currently more than 3,408 active corona cases and 44 deaths in Victoria.

 Based on Worldometer statistics as of today, Australia has 15,580 corona cases with 176 deaths.

 Spanish

 Spain has re-imposed a lockdown in the Catalonia region after cases of new corona transmission have surged in the area since mid-July.

 The government of the Catalonia region told around 140 thousand inhabitants mainly in and around the city of Lerida in the northeast to return to isolation and only to leave home to work or carry out important activities.

 Catalan health authorities also continue to monitor the outbreak at Hospitalet, a densely populated city in the greater Barcelona metropolitan area.  In total, northeastern Catalonia reported more than 800 new cases on Sunday. A week earlier, the Catalan government had restricted residents from traveling to and from the state of El Segria.  This is because the area with a population of 210 thousand has experienced the addition of Covid-19 transmission.

 Spain only opened a national lockdown in mid-June after three months of locking the territory to control the virus which has officially claimed more than 28,300 lives.

 As of today, based on Worldometer statistics, Spain has recorded 327,690 cases with 28,436 deaths.

 Malaysia

 The Malaysian government plans to re-implement the regional locking policy if new cases of the corona virus jump to 100 patients per day.

 Malaysia is currently in the recovery stage and has not implemented a strict movement control order (MCO).  Almost all business and economic activities have resumed while implementing strict health protocols.

 However, Malaysian authorities have again detected a surge in new corona cases in recent weeks.

 The discovery of this new case came after the Ministry of Health had announced zero new corona cases on July 1 for the first time since March. On Tuesday (7/28), Malaysia recorded 39 new cases of corona, of which 28 infections included local transmission.  Tens of new corona cases have also been discovered every day in the past week.

 Vietnamese

 The Vietnamese government decided to close (lockdown) the third largest city in the country, Da Nang, for two weeks after transmission of the corona virus (Covid-19) to 15 people.
